DYKEHEAD AND THE LOCAL AREA
Coll and Tiree cottages date back to the 18th cenury. The "round" room which you can see on the Home Page photo, and which is incorporated into our logo, was once a toll booth. The buildings making up Dykehead House are lsited and are of local architectural and historical interest.
The cottages are surrounded by some of Scotland's most beautiful countryside. We've put some photos of Dyekhead and the local countryside in the Picture Gallery. On our doorstep is the Port of Menteith, a little village with a school, lake-side restaurant and church. Next to this is the Lake of Menteith, which is Scotland's only lake. It's a beautiful, calm stretch of water with mountains framing the background. There's fishing on the Lake and a little island with the ancient Augustinian Inchmahome Priory on it, which can be visited by boat.
The countryside north and west of Dykehead Cottages has been newly designated as Scotland’s first national park and encompasses Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. This area is famous the world over for its scenic beauty. The Loch Lomond and the Trossachs area has an abundance of leisure pursuits that will keep you busy during your stay. There are some stunning views from The bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
You can take a sail on the steamboat on Loch Katrine (only half an hours drive from the cottages) and experience the glorious scenery that inspired Sir Walter Scott to write the poem Lady of the Lake in 1810.
There are many local walks, some that are leisurely, some that are a little more demanding, but all with superb views of the lochs, mountains and glens that surround the area. We will be pleased to provide you with more information about where to walk during your visit with us.
The National Trust for Scotland provides useful information on many historic sites in the surrounding areas, as well as other places of interest to visit during your stay in Scotland.
